Overview:

The Garmin Fenix 8 is the latest flagship in the Fenix series, and it launches tomorrow with a livestream. Here is a recap of everything we know.

Available in both AMOLED and MIP (Memory in Pixel) display versions, the Fenix 8 comes in multiple sizes: 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm. The watches are built with various configurations: sapphire glass and titanium, or Gorilla glass and steel. The MIP models all include solar charging that is said to be 50% more efficient than the Fenix 7 solar models. All models will retain the LED flashlight feature. Prices for the Fenix 8 range from $999.99 to $1199.99.

Size and Screen Changes:

The Fenix 8 introduces significant changes in size and screen dimensions compared to its predecessors. The smallest model has increased from 42mm to 43mm, and with it, the screen size has grown from 1.2 inches to 1.3 inches. Similarly, the 47mm model now features a 1.4-inch screen, up from 1.3 inches, thanks to a slimmer bezel design. Oddly, the 51mm model, however, retains the same 1.4-inch screen size as before, with the larger body primarily accommodating a bigger battery for extended battery life..

Battery Life:

There have been various rumors about the Fenix 8’s battery life, with some suggesting improvements over the Fenix 7 series, while other evidence points to the battery life remaining about the same. However, until the official launch, it’s still uncertain how much of an improvement, if any, we will see in battery performance.

Voice Capabilities:

The Garmin Fenix 8 is equipped with a built-in microphone and speaker, offering a range of voice-controlled features. When paired with a smartphone, users can use voice commands to interact with their device’s smart assistant—Google Assistant for Android devices and Siri for Apple devices. This functionality allows for hands-free operation, such as setting timers, starting specific workout routines, or navigating to a saved waypoint.

Diving Functionality:

One of the big hardware feature changes of the Fenix 8 is its enhanced diving capabilities. The watch supports recreational diving up to 40 meters. The Fenix 8 introduces new activity types to the Fenix line like Snorkel and Diving, catering to a broader range of underwater sports enthusiasts.

Sensors:

The Fenix 8 will retain the same Elevate Gen 5 that the latest Fenix and Epix models had. Additionally, the same multi-band GPS unit is expected to be used. The watch will also include a water depth sensor, which aligns with the new dive capabilities. Beyond that we will have to wait until the launch to learn more about the internals.

New Software:

While the new software built into the Fenix 8 remains one of the greatest mysteries, there are a few details that have surfaced. The Fenix 8 will feature a new user interface more similar to that of the Forerunner 965. Of course with every new watch, Garmin introduces new standard watch faces. Additionally, new activity types will be included. Of course we also know that the Fenix 8 will offer the ability to control the UI and various functions using your voice, adding another layer of convenience to the device.

AMOLED vs. MIP Displays in Garmin Devices: A Deep Dive

Garmin has a long history of using Memory in Pixel (MIP) technology for the screen of its smartwatches, focusing on power efficiency and outdoor visibility. However, in recent years, they’ve introduced AMOLED displays to most of their smartwatch lines. This shift has created the need for users to choose between the energy efficiency of MIP displays and the vibrant picture of AMOLED displays, though both options come with tradeoffs.
