A 45-year-old man from Calgary was hiking alone near Window Mountain Lake, a remote area close to the Alberta/British Columbia border, when he was attacked by a bear. The man was flown to a hospital in Calgary by air ambulance and is currently being treated for his injuries.
The man was seriously injured, but able to signal for help using a Garmin inReach device, which allowed emergency services to locate and rescue him. Garmin inReach devices provide two-way communication via satellite and the ability to send SOS signals from even the most remote locations.
The RCMP, the national police service of Canada, noted, “No matter what your experience level is, while exploring the wilderness, SOS devices are an essential tool for anyone who may find themselves in an emergency situation.”
